Shutter Shades: Do They Actually Work?



Eyewear trends come and go. Some of them come and stay for a long time like aviator shades, while others disappear only to be rediscovered again like oversized shades. When it comes to sunglasses for sale in the Philippines, of the trends that we are familiar with is the shutter shades. It’s such an iconic part of recent fashion that even social media apps like Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, and Instagram stickers and filters feature them.




But regardless of popularity, the question still stands: do shutter shades actually work?


Shutter shades gained popularity as one of Kanye West’s reinvention of the regular shades; it was designed by Alain Mikli for the international hip-hop sensation. The shutter shades first saw the light of day in the premier of Kanye West’s video for Stronger, a song made more popular with the chorus sample from electronic duo Daft Punk.






Shutter shades are also called venetian blind glasses, slatted shades, or Kanye West glasses. Technically, they aren’t any better off than regular sunglasses for 2 reasons: shutter shades do not have actual lenses which means that your eyes are exposed to the world through the slits and, the bars that give the eyewear their iconic look also help you to not see unlike sunglasses for sale in the Philippines where you can completely see what’s in front of you through a filtered tint.


Practically, shutter shades aren’t exactly the eyewear you want to be carrying when you are outside on a sunny day; they obstruct your view and also do not shield your eyes from UV rays. They also do not concentrate light in the same way that pinhole glasses do. If there’s any practical application to what they were made for, it would be that you can put them on in a moderately dark environment like a bar or a club, so that you can look at people but other people won’t be able to easily see if you’re looking at them.


Getting back to our question, shutter shades do not work the way conventional shades are supposed to; they aren’t fit for outdoors, and are only mainly for fashion which makes you better off buying sunglasses for sale in the Philippines.
